GCU Bowling Racks Up 7 Wins in January
The collegiate bowling schedule heats up during the month of January. This provides many opportunities for success. Fortunately, the Lope bowlers took full advantage of these opportunities. The Men’s and Women’s team combined for 5 wins, 4 as a team and 3 individually. The Men’s Varsity Team captured a win at the Antelope Shoot-Out, in Scottsdale, AZ, for their second win of the year. Cameron Smith bowled well all weekend and took home the individual win at the Devil’s Duel, the day prior. The Junior Varsity squad showed the depth of our program by capturing titles at the Sin City Open and Rebel Classic in Las Vegas. Ronald Dela Torre led them in those wins and picked up his first collegiate top 5 finish along the way!
The Women’s team is in their first year of competition, but they did not show any signs of that at the Rebel Classic. The Lady Lopes led wire to wire to capture the first Tier 1 win in the program’s history. Correen Lieber led the way with a dominating individual performance. She won the individual portion of the tournament while firing a 300 game, the 5th of her career! Emily Ornelas joined her in the winner’s circle, with a victory at the Sin City Open. These late season heroics have given the team a chance to compete in the postseason alongside the men’s squad!
Our regular season has come to a close, so the team will use the month of February to prepare for postseason competition in March. If you’d like to follow the team’s progress, give our page, “Grand Canyon University Bowling” a like on Facebook, or follow them at @GCUBowling on Twitter! Lopes Up!
