Reno, Nv., - - - As Dave Cirigliano traveled to Reno, Nv., on May 12, for the USBC Open Championship at the National Bowling Stadium. He only had one goal in mind: to bring his A game to the national bowling stage in the same way he has at tournaments throughout Arizona during the course of the 2015-16 season.
Dave opened his tournament on May 13, with a 708 series helping team Bowling Dynamics.com along with his local Arizona teammates: Steve Roberts, Robert Lewis, Kelly Urrea, and Warren Eales in to first place in the team event.
Dave then plowed full steam into the Doubles and Singles event where he would accomplish something that only one other bowler has done in the history of the Open Championship. He achieved perfection in game three of the Singles event, which was his third perfect game at the Open Championship.
Craig Szplett, of Beecher, Il., was the first to accomplish this feat. He shot his perfect games in: 1996, 2005, and 2013. While Dave rolled his other two perfect games in: 1998, and 2007.
Dave discusses the lane conditions during the singles event.
"Towards the end of the second game, the lanes transitioned. My ball reaction started to get better when they changed. By the time we started the third game, the ball reaction was really good," he said, of the pair he rolled his Doubles and Singles event on. "The opportunity presented itself to roll my third perfect game there."
During the singles event, Dave rolled games of: 243, 214, and 300 for the 757 series. At the time of this article on June 10, he was tied for 15th in singles.
Dave has thrown his three perfect games at the Open Championships, and all were at the National Bowling Stadium. Dave has found incredible success at the stadium.
"I have just been fortunate that I have bowled well at the stadium," he said, of his success there. "I just feel comfortable when I walk into the building, and get comfortable with the surroundings."
The equipment that Dave used at the Open Championships included a Roto Grip Hyper Cell Skid in the Team and Doubles Events. The Storm Fight in the Doubles Event, and the Storm Zero Gravity in the Singles Event. They were just three of the four reactive bowling balls that he took with him.
"The Hyper Cell Skid is an asymmetrical core, so the ball read the mid lane well, and still had enough energy to finish in the back end," he remarked, on his equipment choices. "Zero Gravity is a medium hook potential ball with a weaker core, and worked well when the pattern transitioned during singles."
Team Bowling Dynamics.com rolled a Team All-Events score of 9,710. Warren Eales' nine game total was (2,064). Kelly Urrea, (1,940); Robert Lewis, (1,840), Steven Roberts, (1,769); and Dave Cirigliano, (2,097). This was good enough to knock down Junior Team USA Support#1, who held the previous top score of 9,672. Since then, Hornswoggler S, of Stanton Island, New York has taken over the top spot with a 9,719.
In the individual all-events category, Jakob Butturff of Chandler, is currently in first place with a 2,124 (715,721,688). Dave sits in third at 2,097 (708,632,757). And, Warren Eales also of Chandler is in eighth at 2,064 (640,690,734) Dave is currently leading the Senior All-Events Event, and Warren is in second place.
"I bowl with a talented group of bowlers, and they have many years of experience. The pattern held up well during the team event, and transitioned nicely. That's because we played the lane correctly, and worked together as a team," said Dave, of his teammates. "None of my teammates used the same equipment as I did. However, they had products that were similar."
Kelly and Dave have been bowling on the same team for the last 15 years. Warren joined them six years ago. Robert has been bowling with them for the past two years, and this is Steve's first year with the team. What made their performance in Reno even more interesting, is the fact they can make up an all senior (over 50 years old) team.
"The talent of the senior players in Arizona is growing every year, as our bowling population ages," said Dave, of the senior talent. "The bowlers in Arizona are also successful, because they are very good. There is also a lot of undiscovered talent in Arizona."
Dave also knows a thing or two about discovering untapped talent. He is a USBC Silver Certified Coach with 29 years of coaching experience, and he attended the Don Johnson Advanced School of Bowling.
"Coaching is becoming a large part of my business. Getting the correct bowling ball in the athletes hand, and then teaching them how to use it to its full potential is the key," he said, on getting new bowlers in the game. My pro shop business is successful, because I focus on customer service, and offering the best products at a fair price. Having product in stock, so the customer can purchase it the first time they come in, is very important."
Dave opened his first pro shop in Central Phoenix in 1987, followed by a shop inside Brunswick Kyrene Lanes in 1988. Most recently, he moved his Central Phoenix store inside AMF Christown Lanes, and opened a new location inside AMF Peoria in 2013.
During his 41 years as a competitive bowler Dave has: rolled over 30 perfect games. Rolled 10 299 games, four 298 games, and 19 800 series. His highest three game series is an 857, and highest four game series is 1,128. The Teal Rhino Pro, is his all-time favorite ball.
"When I first started my pro shop business, I did not imagine we would ever see this many bowling balls available by each manufacturer at any given time," he said, of today's market. "Its more difficult for customers to keep up with new releases, than it is for a pro shop operator."
He feels we will never see wood lanes make a comeback, because they are too expensive to maintain.
"A true average is one that you have at any given moment in time. Sometimes lane conditions are difficult, and other times they are more favorable," he said, on his definition of a true average. "My highest career average was this past season at 239 on synthetic surfaces. I prefer the synthetic lane with today's bowling balls."
Dave started the 2015-16 season strong, by winning the Arizona State Masters. Tucson Senior Masters, and Metro Phoenix Senior Masters. He has also found success with his teammates by winning the Metro Phoenix Senior Championships Team Event. And, Arizona State Senior Championships in the: Team, All-Events, and Doubles Events.
"I do not have specific goals that I am trying to reach for this year. I want to continue to perform to the best of my ability," he said, of the rest of 2016. "I would like to stay healthy for the rest of this year. If that happens, I will have the opportunity to bowl well. Success is a journey, and not a destination!".
