Arizona Christian Rolls Into New Season On A Positive Note - Courtesy Of ACU Atheltics.
Diamond Bar, CA – Heading into the Thanksgiving holiday, the Arizona Christian University Bowling team traveled to California for their first out-of-state tournament where they competed in the Floria Financial Services Open against Grand Canyon University, the University of Nevada Las Vegas, Fresno State, Arizona State, UC Davis, San Jose State, Cal Poly, OUAZ, and Cal Fullerton. The team maintained composure while competing against larger schools and the other teams soon took notice. Head coach Dallas Bivens told his team, "they are talking about the Christian School."
The tournament consisted of five team games then ten Baker games. The team played well together, developing more confidence and comradery during the Baker games. Despite their smaller numbers, the team bowled well recording scores in the 190s, 200s and 220. The team-high score for the Baker games was 250.
At the end of the tournament, ACU placed fourth behind GCU, UNLV and Fresno State. Three ACU bowlers finished in the top 20: Russell Bivins 7th, Payton Workman 16th, and CJ Todeschi 20th. Taking pride in what was accomplished, Xavier Watkins, a senior who has been on the team since its inception, said, "I've been to the youth state football playoffs, but this has been the greatest athletic experience I've had."
Coach Bivens had this to say about the team: "The team has been focused on our individual relationships with God. Not only do we pray to open and close our practices, but we hold each other accountable for our Christian walks. This was never so evident as when we competed this weekend and made several strategic player moves. Selflessly, the team supported each other, encouraging and exemplifying servant leadership! In the end, we gave all the glory and honor to the Lord, and we're overwhelmed with how He used us this weekend."
The Firestorm bowling team is back in action December 18th and 19th at the Glenn Carlson Invitational in Las Vegas.

Lopes Kick-Off 2023 Season With A Doubleheader. Courtesy Of GCU.
Diamond Bar, CA.The Grand Canyon University Men's Bowling team kicked off the United States Bowling Congress Collegiate season with a doubleheader weekend in Diamond Bar, California, finishing in second place at both the Oak Tree Open on Saturday and the Floria Financial Services Open on Sunday.
The Lopes got off to a great start in the Oak Tree Open, competing neck-and-neck with Arizona State University throughout the day, but falling short in the final match, 7207-7179.
The Floria Financial Services Open did not feature the same hot start for the Lopes. Consequently, they were forced to bowl from behind, unable to catch Arizona Christian University by the closing frame.
"We got some good experience under pressure," said GCU Head Coach Ben Canfield. "We're confident that the shortcomings now will lead to success in future tournaments."
The GCU JV1 team had a similar experience to the varsity team on Saturday, bowling neck-and-neck with ASU, though the result was different, putting the Sun Devils away in the final match.
The Floria Financial Services Open victory for the JV squad was just as impressive - though this time in wire-to-wire style. Lopes' JV bowler Andrew Merrell placed first overall with a total score of 1062 and an average pinfall of 212.
"Sunday featured a flatter pattern, so we all thought the conditions were going to be hard," said Merrell. "We got some good practice beforehand, though, and Brenden Bobersky, someone who throws the ball similar to me, helped me find the sweet spot One of the key takeaways for the team is going to be more consistency with spare shooting going forward - though our team chemistry and communication were great."
Now the Lopes squad has just under two weeks until they depart for Fresno, California, for the West Coast Collegiate Team Championships on December 2 and 3.
