TUCSON METRO USBC UPDATE

By Mark Kerr, President

TUCSON METRO USBC wants to wish everyone and their families the happiest of holidays and may 2025 be a better year for us all, on and off the lanes.

SENIOR OPEN AND SENIOR WOMEN’S CHAMPIONSHIPS UPDATE: The 62nd Annual Tucson Metro USBC Senior Open Championships and the 45th Annual Tucson Metro USBC Senior Women’s Championships are history.

Forty-eight teams took part in the Senior Open Championships, a 20% increase over 2023, as well as 19 teams took park in this year's Senior Women’s Championships, a 58% increase over last year.

How did this happen, especially with Fiesta Lanes currently closed due to ongoing repairs as well as less bowlers taking part in sanctioned leagues because of this?

Tucson Metro USBC Association Manager Steve Harris came up with the idea to run the tournaments concurrently over the three weekends. Steve's idea worked very well. It gave bowlers more dates to consider to bowl. It helped Tucson Metro USBC run the events as well and saved on costs. Success on all sides!

Tucson Metro USBC Board Members also helped with the tournaments to make them a success. A big shout out to Vice President Stuart Duncan, Kari Snyder, Joe Shelton, Joe Beard, Lino Nava Jr., Matt Klaer, Gloria Harris and Alonso Sodari, who I had the opportunity to work with for these tournaments.

Congratulations to Felipe Espriu who bowled a 298 and Rich Miller who bowled a 299 in the team events for the Senior Open as well as John Cook who bowled an 812 scratch in the Senior Open singles competition, and Ron Schloss who bowled 803 in doubles.

During the Senior Open Women’s Championships, Bunnie Colwell bowled the first perfect game (300) in the history of the tournament. Bunnie bowled it in the first game of the team event. Congratulations Bunnie!

Special thanks to Candy Prokosch and the staff of Cactus Bowl who hosted the tournaments. Final standings are posted on the Tucson Metro USBC website and Facebook.

STEVE HARRIS: Steve Harris goes the extra mile as the Association Manager for Tucson Metro USBC and our Tucson bowling family owes Steve a big thank you for his work and commitment to bowling. The Open Championships as well as the Women’s Championships taking place in February and March 2025 will also be conducted concurrently.

TOURNAMENT UPDATE: With the current, ongoing situation with Fiesta Lanes, the Tucson Metro USBC Women’s Championships and the Open Championships will be bowled in one center, Lucky Strike Bowl. Entry applications are available online at the Tucson Metro USBC website and will be at Tucson's bowling centers shortly.

Next Posposhil faced Arce and again the best of 2 went to Posposhil. In the final match up they faced team Brown, with Posposhil winning game 1 then Team Brown came back to win game 2. We then went to a sudden death roll off. Team Brown struck, then Posposhil answered back with a strike. Next bowler was up for Brown and threw another strike. This time team Posposhil couldn't match it and Team Brown took home the victory.

Fresno, CA. - - - This past weekend, the Lopes traveled to Fresno, California for the 51st Annual West Coast Collegiate Team Championships.

The squad got off to a hot start on Day 1 en route to qualifying as the top seed for match play by over 300 pins to earn 1st place ranking points. Unfortunately, their run ended in the semi-finals against San Jose State. Day 2 consisted of 11, head-to-head matches. The guys ended with a 9-2 record, which tied champions Fresno State, but were outpaced in total pins. Congrats to the Rebels and Bulldogs on their wins!

Jovan and Mike earned spots on the combined All-Tournament Team, finishing 2nd and 3rd respectively.

Thanks to all of our supporters near and far! The whole program is excited to head to Las Vegas in just about a week. Lopes Up!
