Smart Program Continues To Grow - From Bowl.com.
ARLINGTON, Texas – The United States Bowling Congress Scholarship Management and Account Reporting for Tenpins (SMART) program is making an investment earnings allocation of $7 million to provide additional scholarships for youth bowlers. The $7 million allocation is consistent with funding provided since 2022 and matches the largest investment earnings allocation in SMART history.
In addition to the earnings allocation, SMART is allocating $500,000 in earnings to support USBC national scholarship programs. This funding will provide additional scholarships to the USA Bowling program as well as other USBC conducted national programs.
Due to policy adopted in 2021, a portion of annual investment earnings immediately goes to new scholarships for youth bowlers. SMART is progressively paying more benefits for students every year. In 2024, SMART processed the largest total disbursements in program history, reaching $13 million. This exceeds the previous record set in 2023 of $11.3 million.
Included in the 2024 allocation:
- $2.6 million in bonus scholarships to the 7,127 active SMART Recipients. These are students who used SMART funds in 2024. Each student will immediately receive a new $365 SMART scholarship.
- $1.8 million in new SMART deposited unassigned funds for Providers to allocate toward future scholarships. This is in addition to the new $3.3 million SMART deposited unassigned funds Providers received for allocation in January from expired Recipient accounts.
- $2.6 million is set aside for the SMART Pell Grant Match Program for the 2025-2026 academic year.
“The SMART program keeps growing every year and helping more kids than ever before pay for education,” USBC President Dennis Hacker said. “We are proud to announce another meaningful earnings allocation which will benefit our youth bowlers, SMART providers and the sport overall.”
New for 2025, SMART has adjusted requirements for the SMART Pell Grant Match program. To be eligible for the program, recipients must have four prior years of USBC membership history, with at least one of the four being a youth membership, and have a current SMART scholarship account balance less than $1,000. These changes are intended to ensure that engaged recipients with several years of youth bowling and immediate need receive funding priority. The new criteria will apply to all applicants in the 2025-2026 school year.
The federal Pell Grant is a national program that helps students and families with the greatest financial need pay for college. The SMART Pell Grant Match maximizes the power of this federal program for bowlers by matching it dollar for dollar. Students can request the SMART Pell Grant Match by visiting BOWL.com/SMART.
“Applications for the SMART Pell Grant Match program have increased every year,” said Frank Wilkinson, chair of the USBC SMART Committee. “We have a lot of youth bowlers in financial need who want to pursue education after high school. SMART helps make it happen and reduces the need to take out student loans.”
In 2021, the USBC Board of Directors approved a series of policy changes for SMART, designed to increase scholarship benefits for SMART Recipients. The new policy allocates a portion of investment gains to be awarded as new scholarships in SMART Recipient accounts.

Reno To Roll Out Welcome Mat In 2026 - From Bowl.com.
ARLINGTON, Texas – The United States Bowling Congress has reached an agreement with Reno’s premier resort casinos – Eldorado, Silver Legacy and Circus Circus – to serve as the presenting sponsors for the USBC Open and Women’s Championships when the tournaments visit Reno from 2026 to 2033.
As part of the agreement, the downtown properties also will serve as the hosting hotels for each event, giving bowlers the chance to save on expenses through special rates and benefits.
In addition, Silver Legacy will be the spot for bowlers to pick up all same-day brackets payouts for both the Open and Women’s Championships.
The Open Championships is scheduled to head to Reno in 2026, 2029 and 2032. The Women's Championships will be making appearances in The Biggest Little City in the World in 2028 and 2033.
Each event will be contested at the famed National Bowling Stadium. The Taj Mahal of Tenpins also is located downtown and just a short walk from all three resorts.
“We are incredibly excited to be able to continue this wonderful partnership with the USBC for years to come,” said General Manager Mark Huse. “At the Eldorado, Circus Circus and Silver Legacy, we are proud to offer family-style service that makes our guests feel at home. Our goal is for the USBC bowlers to find a home away from home with us, only one block away from the National Bowling Stadium. Reno is a city with something for everyone, and we hope that our bowlers enjoy everything from world-class food and entertainment to our beautiful outdoors.”
With registration for the 2026 Open Championships – which currently is scheduled to run from March 14 to July 5 – set to open to the public on Thursday, Feb. 27 at 1 p.m. Eastern, the partnering resort casinos also will have several deals in place for those looking to secure their accommodations in Reno through MyBowlingVacation.com.
Eldorado and Silver Legacy will feature rates starting at $60 per night for bowlers at the 2026 Open Championships. Circus Circus will have rates starting at $49 per night.
Bowlers will be able to save on resort fees in 2026, too. The resort casinos will waive all resort fees for those who have booked their stay prior to Aug. 31, 2025. For reservations made after the deadline, bowlers will receive 50% off resort fees.
USBC members can take advantage of exclusive food and beverage discounts at all three resort casinos, as well as special deals at retail outlets and The Spa at Silver Legacy.
There also will be exclusive packages available for coordinators in the Captain’s Club, based on the total number of room nights booked for their group.
“We’ve always had a great relationship with the teams at Eldorado, Silver Legacy and Circus Circus, and they are rolling out the red carpet for the bowlers with these great promotions,” USBC Executive Director Chad Murphy said. “This partnership will allow us to continue to build for the future of our Championship Tournaments and give the bowlers an incredible experience on and off the lanes.”
Reno has hosted the Open Championships on 14 occasions, with the most recent appearance taking place in 2023. The Women’s Championships has been held in Washoe County a total of 13 times, including in 2024.

GCU Wraps Up Regular Season At Hoosier Classic - Courtesy Of GCU.
The Lopes wrapped up their regular season campaign with a 24th place finish at the Hoosier Classic. The squad left some pins out on the lanes, but a top 25 finish in the deepest field of the season (78 teams) is nothing to be ashamed of! Thank you to those of you who financially supported the 8 students who represented the team this weekend to make this trip possible!
The focus now shifts to the postseason with USBC Sectional Announcements coming later this week and official invitations to the Collegiate Club National Championships shortly following. Stay tuned! #lopesup.
