USBC Revoked Approval Of Storm Spectre - Courtesy Of Bowl.Com.
ARLINGTON, Texas - The United States Bowling Congress has revoked approval of the Storm Spectre bowling ball and removed it from the list of balls approved for USBC competition effective March 14, 2022. The revocation comes after USBC determined through its spot-checking procedures that a significant percentage of the balls produced do not comply with specifications and requirements outlined in the USBC Equipment Specifications and Certifications Manual.
USBC testing showed a significant percentage of the Storm Spectre do not meet the minimum 73D hardness specification during spot checks of bowling balls in the field. The ball originally was approved based on samples submitted by Storm. The Spectre had been approved for competition in December 2021.
The USBC Equipment Specifications and Certifications Manual details USBC governance in this situation. The manual states that a statistical analysis from spot-checked balls will be used to determine the percentage of non-conformance based on DPMO (defects per million opportunities). The manual further states:
Ball approval can be revoked if the process capability shows the model has greater than 5.0% defects (50,000 out of 1,000,000 DPMO-Defects Per Million Opportunities) outside of any spec limit.
The statistical analysis of the Storm Spectre indicated a defect rate of 98.6%, meaning that 98.6% of Spectre balls are projected to be outside USBC's hardness specification limit. USBC tested balls from multiple batches, and the non-conformance was not limited to a specific batch.
Pursuant to the penalties outlined in the USBC Equipment Specifications and Certifications Manual, Storm is placed on probationary status with USBC for one year, and subject to a fine of $8,000.
USBC publishes a standard operating procedure to determine hardness of a bowling ball using a digital durometer. The USBC Equipment Specifications Manual states that balls must meet technical specifications when tested at USBC headquarters using the official USBC test equipment. USBC provides all manufacturers the option of calibrating their durometers against the USBC approval durometer, so manufacturers can create consistent quality testing processes.
USBC provided all test data to Storm and gave the company opportunity to comment or provide additional information prior to USBC announcing approval revocation of the Spectre ball.
Unapproved bowling balls may not be used in USBC-certified competition. Bowlers who used the Spectre in competition before March 14, 2022, with no prior knowledge of their balls being out of specification would not be subject to forfeiture under USBC rules.
Go to BOWL.com/EquipAndSpecs to learn more about the equipment specifications.

Scotford Wins JBT Title - Courtesy Of JBT.
Glendale - - - Tyler Morgan and Brockton Scotford claimed JBT titles in sold-out Arizona Conference action at Bowlero Glendale.
Corbin Reid-Hirsch bowled great to reach his first finals in a while, but red-hot Josh Molloy stopped him in round one of the scratch division stepladder finals 236-200. 17-time champ Cerell Cardines then stopped Molloy to advance to the title game.
Top seed Tyler Morgan came into the day just hoping to lock down an Invitational berth, but did way better than that by averaging over 230 to take the number one spot. Cardines was hoping to break a long victory drought, but it was not to be as Morgan stayed in control for a 213-200 win, good for the third title of his JBT career.
Brockton Scotford led after qualifying, then hung on to make the handicap stepladder, and began a climb up it with a 218-216 squeaker over impressive newcomer Wyatt Ortale. Brock then got on a roll, beating much-improved RJ Pointon 251-213 to reach the final. Cayden Matherly had a breakout day to grab the top seed for the first time, but slowed down just a little in the title game. Scotford was able to take advantage for a 216-194 win, finally capturing a long-awaited first career JBT title.
Madison Holman kept rolling in the Girls Scratch subdivision, beating Koryn Marquez for that win, while Scotford swept his events by beating Cesar Padilla for the U17 crown.
Huge thanks to JBT alumni Alexis Atkin and the Bowlero crew for a great hosting job on a busy day. Want in on the fun for all skill levels and ages? Just check out our schedule and come on down!
JBT AMF Union Hills Results.
Union Hills - - - Cesar Padilla and Xaden Todacheenie were the day's ultimate survivors, capturing JBT titles in exciting Arizona Conference action at AMF Union Hills.
After qualifying, bowlers competed in 'pick your survivor', with the low bowler out pair by pair until only one remained, and the matchups determined by the higher-seeded bowlers. Scratch was whittled down from 15 qualifiers to just three survivors, and in that round Harper Schmidt bowed out with 191 as Padilla's 228 and Cerell Cardines' 199 were enough to advance. In the final, Cerell, who had been masterfully adjusting all day long on the tricky Dragon pattern just enough to survive, could not find the right combination in time, and Padilla's clean 213 was plenty to claim the fourth title of the rising star's JBT career.
Twenty handicap division survivors were eventually whittled down to the final four, and in those semifinals, Todacheenie ended Brockton Scotford's attempt at back to back wins 257-187, and Tucson's Nathan Bravo beat Paityn Gaines 211-186 to set up the title match. In the final, Nathan (who made a great late comeback just to make the first cut) made another great comeback to get back in the match, to the delight of the large Cactus crowd cheering him on. However, Xaden quietly did his thing, and it turned out to be just enough to hang on to the win and earn the New Mexican his first career JBT title.
Padilla got revenge in the U17 final, blasting 276 to defeat Schmidt for that subdivision win. Madison Holman and Koryn Marquez played again for the Girls Scratch title, and again Madison came out on top for the win. But they each got stickers and thus left as happy campers.
Big thanks to 5-time JBT champ Alexis Atkin and her teams at Union Hills and Glendale for a great Phoenix weekend. Want in on all the fun? Just check out our schedule and come on down, plenty of time left in the season to join in!

GCU Comes Up Short At ITC Sectionals - Courtesy Of GCU
Dallas/Ft. Worth, TX. - - - Our run at ITC Sectionals came up a bit short of our goal with a 7th place finish. We didn't have our best this weekend, March 12-13, but fought hard until the last of the 64 baker games. It felt great to be back at a postseason event for the first time since the beginning of the pandemic! We'll take what we learned this weekend and put it to good use in a few weeks at the Collegiate Club Championships! #LopesUp #TeamVirtue.
