Tucson Metro USBC Update

By Mark R. Kerr – President

President’s Report: Your Tucson Metro USBC Board took office on Sunday, August 1, 2021 to begin their term and planning for the 2021-22 season.

Tucson - - - Hard work, commitment and determination resulted in a schedule of tournaments which saw an increase of sanctioned bowlers, from Tucson and across Arizona taking part.

As your President, I want to thank you all for your support of Tucson Metro USBC with your participation in the tournaments: Senior Women’s, Senior Open Championships, Women’s Open Championships, the Open Championship, as well as the Senior Masters Sweeper, Senior Masters Championship, Open Masters Sweeper and Open Masters Championship tournaments. All the tournaments showed an increase in the number of bowlers. Congratulations to the winners of the events during these tournaments.

Your Tucson Metro USBC Board wants to thank the Management and Staff at the Vantage Bowling Centers, as well as the Management and Staff at Bowlero. Without you, we wouldn’t have the tournaments and we are grateful to work together this season and look forward to future years and events. We also want to thank Arizona State USBC and Herb Grassl with Desert Bowler for their work with us this season. This season, Tucson Metro USBC had the privilege of assisting with the Arizona State Senior Women’s Open and Senior Open, held at Cactus Bowl.

I also want to thank Donna Hicks, Board Vice President, and Board Members: Gloria Harris, Belinda Hiscox, Lino Nava Jr., Stuart Duncan, Kari Snyder, Webmaster Terry Snyder, Stacey Pollard, Jim Hamilton, Tayler Clark, Juan Canez, Harley Brown and Lyn Peterson for their work for you, the bowlers, this season. I also want to give special thanks to Steve Harris, our Association Manager who helped this new Board during this season so much and was so instrumental for its success. To you all, you all make bowling and hosting tournaments fun and I am forever grateful.

The increase in bowlers, was also not limited to tournaments but the leagues that took the floor for the 2021-22 season. Your Tucson Metro USBC Board thanks you for your support and showing that “Bowling is Back!”

Tucson Metro USBC was so thrilled to give out 4,093 award patches and processed 41 11 In A Row Mugs, handing out the latest 18. It was a privilege to hand out the 300 rings, plaques, as well as the 800 rings and plaques too to bowlers!

We have the honor to recognize two City records this year. GOB Squad (Josh Moret, Shawn Whitelaw, J.J. Holman and Matt Berube), for their one game record (four person team) of 1101. Matt Heichel, who bowled 888 (298,300 and 290) for the highest three game series in Tucson history, which in turn was the highest series bowled in the State of Arizona in 2021, and recognized by Arizona State USBC for his accomplishments. Congratulations to you all!

It has been a great first year for your Tucson Metro USBC Board and we are looking forward to the 2022-23 season, with an additional sweeper tournament to benefit youth bowling and veterans, as well as bringing back the Tucson Metro USBC Queens Tournament.

Your Tucson Metro USBC Board is here for you, the bowler. We have learned, laughed and look forward to the tournaments and making bowling a great experience. Thank you all for your support.

Tournament Update: Your Tucson Metro USBC Board are in the process of doing a post mortem on the tournaments, the rules, structure, time of squads and all other aspects to plan now for the 2022-23 season, which will include a “Welcome Back” Sweeper Tournament and the Tucson Metro USBC Queens Tournament. If you have suggestions, comments or thoughts on the tournaments and ideas for the Board to review and potentially change, please send your suggestions to: am@tucsonmetrousbc.com and we look forward to taking them up to make the tournaments better for you, the bowlers.

Tucson Metro USBC Annual Meeting June 5: Your Tucson Metro USBC Board will be holding their Annual Meeting, Sunday, June 5, 2 pm, at the Kaycee Club Ballroom, located at 601 S. The Cactus Junior Bowlers Program has done so much for their youth bowlers, the future of our sport.

When one goes into Cactus Bowl to bowl in league and otherwise, bowlers will see these banners that honor the Cactus Junior Bowlers on Saturday, May 7. Thanks to Rene Canez Jr. and the Cactus Juniors Director, Matt Hunt, these banners are here. Also, they have banner up in tribute to Beezy Leach. It is great see people working with our young bowlers and Cactus management, Destiny Lopez so supportive. Thank you all for what you do for bowling and our bowling family.

Kari Snyder, your Tucson Metro USBC Board Member, Terry Snyder, your Tucson Metro USBC Board Member and Donna Smith Hicks, Vice President, presented Matt Hunt his 800 ring at Cactus Bowl on Tuesday, May 10, that he bowled on April 13, 2022. Matt bowled 246, 300 and 269 for 815, his first 800 series and his 14th career 300. Matt's bowling was emotional for him because the following day, April 14, was the ten year anniversary of Sergeant Tanner Higgins, who Matt had served with in the U.S. Army and dedicated his 14th 300 to him.
