Las Vegas - - - What a way to complete an action packed season! Over 170 bowlers filled the South Point Plaza for the West Regions final event of 2023. Competitors battled the PBA Anthony pattern in hopes of securing an RPI automatic birth into the finals here in January.

After the first 2 matches in the step ladder, our final match came down between the #1 seed, Tom Hess Bowling, and the #2 seeded, Scott Critchfield of Canyon Country, CA. Just a few weeks ago, Critchfield bowled for the title in our members only event at Black Oak Casino but couldn’t close the door as the #1 seed. His experience in that match helped him gain confidence this week against the strongest field the West region has seen in quite a while. The poise and confidence that Hess had throughout the match showed why he is a Major Champion on the PBA Tour. He didn’t have the best look but stayed patient with a clean 226-169 win over Critchfield claiming his 15th career Regional title.

On the regular division side, our field of 86 bowlers was narrowed down to the top 12 with 4 more games to determine our step ladder and implications for year end awards.

Southwest region bowler, Deo Benard, opened the door for potential POY candidate PJ Haggerty, to walk his way into the stepladder and steal the points lead. The task proved too much to handle as National Tour Champion and local favorite, Darren Tang, ended his run. After a semi-final win over Matt Murtishaw, Tang was matched up against the #1 seed Cortez Schenck of Phoenix, AZ. Schenck was the 2022 PBA West Region ROY and lead the star studded field from game 2 till the final frame.

In the title match, Tang had carry issues, which he didn’t have the previous two games. Schenck stepped up in the tenth frame needing a double to shut Tang out and earn his 4th career title and second of the year. Like he did all tournament, he did just that as he defeated Tang, 230-207 and threw his hat into the POY race.

A big thank you to the staff at the South Point Tournament Bowling Plaza for hosting 3 events this weekend for the PBA. We return in January for our annual RPI finals right here in this building where over $100,000 will be given away!

Tucson - - - Cesar Padilla and Ethan Brancatelli picked up JBT titles in exciting Arizona Conference action at Bowlero Tucson.

Matthew Garrett made his season debut a success with a 182-152 win over Daryus Alo to begin the scratch division stepladder finals.  Another relative newcomer, Caden Ament, stopped Garrett in another low scoring match 185-179 to reach the finals.  Top seed Cesar Padilla would have none of the lower scoring pace, having earlier blasted 299 to consolidate the lead, and then putting on an impressive ten strike title match performance for a 265-198 win, good for the 8th title of his JBT career.

Alex London is off to a red hot start this season, and began his third finals with a 229-213 win over Matthew Christensen.  He followed that up with a 238-215 win over Isaiah Pino to reach the title match.  Another member of the large Cactus contingent, Ethan Brancatelli, fired a 263 scratch game to leap a congested field into the top seed, and was strong in the final game as well, defeating London for the first title of his JBT career.

Katelyn Abigania extended her all-time lead in Girls Scratch wins with a final victory over Kendall Bollea.   Daryus Alo rebounded from rough results lately to beat Zackary Evans for the U17 title.  Jordan Cox won a ball of his choice from our title sponsor, the brands of Brunswick. Thanks as always to Jacob Smith and his team for their usual flawless hosting job.  Want in on all this fun for all skill levels?  Just check out our schedule and come on down!

Results From Sunday November 12.

Tucson - - -Rene Canez and Jon Abigania had the antidotes, capturing JBT titles in 'pick your poison' format action at Bowlero Tucson.

In this format, top seeded bowlers choose who they want to bowl in a matchplay bracket.  Sixteen finalists were carved down to four in each division.  In scratch, Katelyn Abigania outstruck Juan Canez 259-234, while Rene Canez (no relation) got past Mason Snow 240-212 to set up the title match.  The day's pattern had played tricky in qualifying, but the talented field really opened it up in matchplay, with Brock Bivins and Canez each throwing their first JBT 300s, with Rene adding a 289 later for good measure.  The final was a score-fest as well, with each throwing great shots and putting up Xs.  In the end, Canez' clutch tenth frame double shut out Katelyn, and the win earned him his first career JBT title.

The handicap final four featured two of the Cactus 'mafia', but they went to bowl with the fishes in that round, with Katelyn's brother Jon Abigania stopping Sam Winemiller 221-198, and Peyton Lee halting Miguel Espinoza 220-160 to set up the final game.  Lee had been lucky to get in the field when one qualifier could not continue, and made the most of it to get all the way to the final, but the luck ran out there.   Jon rolled a big game to avenge Katelyn's loss and claim the 6th title of his still young JBT career, making it over 20 titles combined for the amazing Abigania kids!

Katelyn was able to sweep the girls scratch weekend, this time with a win over Mackenzie Paige, while Jason Gootzeit, beatDaryus Alo for the U17 win (in the first game of matchplay when top seed Alo chose him for the round one match).  Big thanks as always to JBT alum Jacob and his team for their usual great hosting job!  Want in on all the fun for all ages and skill levels?  Just check out our schedule, and come on down!
