Tucson Metro USBC Update
By Mark Kerr, President
Tucson - - - I want to welcome all the new bowlers taking part in Tucson’s established and new leagues in the 2023-24 season, as well as welcome back the established bowlers taking part in the leagues in the bowling centers in the Tucson area.
It has been a busy time for Tucson Metro USBC since the last update, holding three tournaments and supporting a fourth.
I want to congratulate Cory Knop with Ready to Strike Bowl on the successful, third annual Pay-It-Forward Tournament, held September 16 at Bowlero Tucson, which raised $9350 for Tucson’s youth bowling programs! Tucson came together and paid it forward for the future of bowling, our youth bowlers!
I want to thank everyone who took part in the Senior/Not Senior, aka Sports Shot Sweeper Tournament, held September 23, at Cactus Bowl and congratulations to Shawn Whitelaw, who won the Sweeper and the free entry into the 2024 Tucson Metro USBC Masters Tournament.
Tucson Metro USBC appreciated the comments on the Sweeper, publicizing the bowling pattern, which was Winding Road, for it and the Senior/Super Senior Masters events. We want to give bowlers the information and the opportunity to try the pattern out before these events, as well as the Masters and Queens and will continue to do so.
On Sunday, September 24, the inaugural Tucson Metro USBC Super Senior Masters took place at Cactus Bowl and congratulations to Tucson Metro USBC Hall of Famer, Steven Hiscox for winning the first tournament and congratulations on his win. A big thank you to all the Super Senior bowlers who came out and took part. You helped to make this a success and a permanent part of the schedule.
The next week, September 30 – October 1, the Tucson Metro USBC Senior Masters took place, also at Cactus Bowl. Bowlers turned out and competed in qualifying on Saturday, September 30 and double elimination match play on Sunday, October 1.
After qualifying and a long day of match play, Tucson Metro USBC Hall of Famer and Super Senior, Kary Harris, won the Senior Masters, defeated defending champion John Cook. Conditions were challenging and Kary won the event bowling his first 200 game in the last game of his match with John Cook. Congratulations Kary!
On the weekend of November 18-19, the Tucson Metro USBC Senior Women’s Tournament will take place at Cactus Bowl. For more information, go online to tucsonmetrousbc.com, or Tucson Metro USBC’s Facebook page.
During this time, Tucson’s bowling family became aware of a tragic accident that had befallen one of its promising youth bowlers, Keith Ylvisaker. Keith was in an accident in Las Vegas, Saturday September 30, that left him unconscious and had to have brain surgery. He is in the ICU and still not awake but his vitals are well and stable.
Tucson’s bowling family is coming together and helping Keith and the family. A GoFundMe page has also been set up so the bowling community can show their support of this great young bowler.
Keith is part of the Cactus Junior Bowling Program, also known as the Cactus Mafia (Family), and he bowled and was a success on the JBT (Junior Bowlers Tour), who at their recent event, raised funds to help Keith and his family during this time. On November 11-12, the JBT will be in the Old Pueblo at Bowlero Tucson. For more information, go online to bowljbt.com.
The 2023-24 bowling season is underway in Tucson, and congratulations goes out to the following bowlers on their accomplishments:
