Mesa - - - It was the fall of 2015, when the Ballbusters Women's Bowling League made its debut as a new sanctioned league at Mesa East Bowl in Mesa.
And, besides having a main goal of making it a competitive league, there was something else that Cindy Coor wanted to focus on with the 60 other ladies who bowl in the league on Monday Night.
"I would like to establish this league as not only the best women's league in the Phoenix Metropolitan area," she said, "but, also make it known for it's community involvement as well."
So, enter the local charity which the league chose to adopt, and make sure not one, but 70 other kids were made happy that they would have a present to unwrap on Christmas morning.
"Sunshine Acres provided me a list of approximately 70 children and their wishes for Christmas. My goal was to ensure each and every child on the list had something to open on Christmas day," said Cindy, on getting her league involved with this project. "Sunshine Acres is a facility that provides a loving, wholesome, Christian home for children who are seperated from their parents. To help them establish long-term relationships with stable parental figures preparing them for sucess in adult life. They have children from two months old to children in their late teens. We also raffled off a cute Christmas Bowling Ball, and all proceeds collected were also given to them to purchase additional gifts for the new kids coming in."
Once word got out in the bowling center that the Ballbusters were participating in the charity drive, it did not take long for the ladies to get others involved.
"We did have a few of the men on the Girl Watchers League adopt a child as well," said Cindy, of the support. "We only needed seven to meet our goal, and they made it happen. Mesa East allowed us to have the toy drive and their support is great. One of their employees, Scott, is one who has really devoted his passion to giving to them, and I thought it would be a perfect fit for our group to join his worthy cause."
The ladies can take pride in knowing when they all pull together to get something done for a charity, it will have a long lasting, positive effect on everyone.
"There are no words to describe the feeling that all of the women had in our league. When we presented Sunshine Acres Office Manager, Kim Raibourne all of the gifts that were collected, it was really something special," said Cindy, of the presentation. "I am just so honored and privileged to know and be associated with these amazing women in our league. It takes a special group to create the synergy that our league has. I am hoping that this will be a standing tradition from now on."
Other charities that the Ballbusters collect funds for, along with the Girl Watchers League, is the BVL.
"At this point since we are a new league, I believe that we will focus on the BVL and the toy drive for now," said Cindy. "However, you never know what event may come up that our great community will need help with."
