MATT HEICHEL BOWLS HISTORIC SERIES
IN TUCSON LEAGUE TO SET A NEW RECORD
By Mark R. Kerr
TUCSON - On Wednesday evening, June 9, bowlers took to the lanes for the Dynamic Duos League at Lucky Strike Bowl, a historic night of league bowling.
The Dynamic Duos League, a USBC Sanctioned League, consists of two individuals per team bowling a total of four games each week, but with a twist. The first two games are bowled on one pair of lanes, while games three and four are bowled on another pair of lanes.
What makes what Matt Heichel did June 9, on the lanes, amazing and remarkable.
In his first set on lanes 9 and 10, Matt was bowling with his doubles teammate, Bryan Van Sickle. They bowled alone since the other team they were to face, were at USBC Nationals. Matt bowled 298 and 300 in his first and second games.
Matt and Bryan were to go to lanes 5 and 6, for their third and fourth games. Since they were done so quickly, they had to wait for the teams on these lanes to finish and their opponents for games three and four.
With a spare in the first frame and going off the sheet, Matt had a 290 for his third game and had an 888 series for three games, setting a new high series record for a sanctioned league in the City of Tucson.
“I was just trying to stay calm after I shot 298-300, I knew we had to move pairs so I had to refocus,” said Matt Heichel. “The first ball on the new pair didn't hook so I moved everything right and had a good look the rest of the game! I was just trying to stay focused and not get too amped up.”
Matt went on to say, “I would like to thank my Mom and Dad, and coach Doug O'Berry, if it wasn’t for them I wouldn’t be the bowler I am today and the 888 wouldn’t have been possible! I would also like to thank my wife Anna Heichel who always keeps my head up when I get down on myself, I love you very much!”
Heichel added that, “I want to thank Bryan Van Sickle, Chris McHenry and Tim Jacob, if it wasn’t for them three welcoming me to Arizona and the bowling community, including Donna Hicks and Mark Kerr, out here this wouldn’t be possible either! Lastly, I would like to thank all my Michigan bowling friends, especially Nick Cooper who gave me the confidence to compete no matter what!”
It was great bowling to make it an historic night.
